Trust Vote more interesting than an Ind-Pak T20 final

July 20, 2008

The trust vote to be held on July 22nd in the Indian parliament is in all probability going to see a nail biting finish. If the follow up to the vote is anything to go by, lots of surprises are in store for us. Indian politics has all come down to the numbers now. Ideologies are non existent or have taken a back seat. The marginal parties have suddenly come into the limelight. Its their moment to milk the cow (Indian taxpayers money). Every single MP has become invaluable and the going price for each MP who is on sale is several crores (Rs 25 crore to Rs 100 crore as per newspaper reports). Neither the UPA, nor the NDA and UNPA wants to leave anything to chance. Remember how the AB Vajpayee lost the vote of confidence in 1999 by just 1 vote (269 to 270) and  the country was pushed to fresh elections.

But we will not know anything till the verdict is out. It is total chaos out there. BSP clamis to have support of 5 to 7 SP MPs. Some of them have openly switched sides. On the other hands SP’s Amar Singh says that 10 BSP MPs are having chai-pani in his house. Shibu Soren (JMM spuremo) has already pledged their support for UPA afte brokering a great deal (Union cabinet minister berth for himself, jharkhand’s deputy CM’s post for son and a Mos for one of his MPs). All this on the basis of 5 MPs that he has. Dewe Gowds of JD (S) with 3 MPs and RLD of Ajit Singh with 3 MPs have decided to vote against the UPA. Omar Abdulla of NC says that he has made up his mind on whom to vote for but will not make it public until the debate of the floor of the parliament. On the other hand, congress clamis to have poached several BJP MPs and so does the BJP. We will not know anything for sure until the final ball is bowled (oops….until the final vote is cast) on July 22nd.
