India’s Papa CJ out of Last Comic Standing

July 17, 2008

New Delhi’s “Papa CJ” got eliminated from the Last Comic Standing (American version of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge) last night. The show is telecast prime time on NBC and enjoys a viewership of around 10 million. To Papa CJ’s credit, getting into top 10 is no mean achievement.

I think that Stand-Up comedy is very tightly coupled to the culture of a country. Stand-up comedians either take a situation and exploit it, pick on peoples’ behavior or comment about their celebrities. Now we would be unfair to expect Papa CJ to know about the American culture, make jokes and also be funny at the same time. So he took the safer route. He did what he does best. Comment on Indian people and culture. He tried to make these jokes relevant for the American audience and for most part he was successful. His jokes were something on the lines of Peter Russells’ (but not as good). Now no one can expect to win an American competition by not cracking jokes on George Bush, OJ Simpson and Britney Spears :).

The host introduced Papa CJ as “India’s Favorite Comedian”. Frankly speaking i had never heard of him until i saw him on this show. A bit of googling educated me on his achievements. This guy is quite popular on the UK comic circuit. He has also won some competition in the UK and Australia. But, he sure is not popular in India where English stand-up is almost non-existent.
