Today i did a google for “SEO”. This is what wiki has to say about SEO
“Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results or the higher it “ranks”, the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.
As a marketing strategy for increasing a site’s relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site’s coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove them from their indices.
The initialism “SEO” can also refer to “search engine optimizers”, terms adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term “search engine friendly” may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems, URLs, and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.”

Rule 1:
Site must include either a SEO World Championship text link or a banner. (The banner may be linked or not linked)
Analysis: These guys actually created a new web site just for the sake of this championship. They could have easily managed the entire seo championship from their own business website (http://www.getupdated.com/) and got thousands of direct backlinks from the participants. But, ethically that would have been a black hat SEO technique to get back links (atleast i believe so). The asked for backlinks only to the championship site which is fair. Busby Challenge fails miserably on this count.
Rule 2: Your official domain must be registered the same day or after January the 15th 2007.
(All domains registered before the 15th of January 2007 will not qualify for the competition, no record of the domain is allowed. )
Analysis: Another master stroke from the global warming awareness guys. Instead of allowing contestants to use their existing well established domains, they require the participants to register a new domain thus giving a level playing field to every webmaster and SEO consultant. They could do this because they were not greedy (unlike busby seo) and didn’t care about valuable backlinks from established pages to their site. Again, the SEO Challenge by busby falls flat on its face in this analysis.
Moreover, they keyword they chose “Global Warming Awareness 2007″ was socially relevant to create awareness about global warming. They also donated 10 cents to Red Cross for every participant.
Verdict: The seo challenge by Busby is not a real championship, but just a scam to advertise their business using black hat seo techniques. Thumbs down!!!

- Your official domain must be registered the same day or after January the 15th 2007.
(All domains registered before the 15th of January 2007 will not qualify for the competition, no record of the domain is allowed. ) - Website will not use SEO methods which are clearly not approved by Search Engine Guidelines for example: doorway pages, etc. (Any participant ignoring the Google webmaster guidelines will not qualify for a prize)
The above rules are much fairer than rules of Busby SEO challenge. Why do i think so? In my next blog…

Why do i care about the Busby SEO challenge (by an Australian web designing company) rules?
I care about the busby SEO rules because i am a budding webmaster and would have loved to have a level playing filed. If i did well, this could have given me the much needed exposure and would have hooked me up with established webmasters. If i didn’t do well, i would have swallowed the bitter pill and accept that i am not good enough yet. I would have worked harder.
But, now with the current set of rules, if i don’t do well, i will never know if it happened because i had a fresh domain or i am not good enough.
Why am i still participating?\
Hope. Hope. Hope.
This is the first opportunity i get to wrestle my SEO skills with the rest of the world. Though i don’t fully agree with the fairness of the busby-seo-challenge rules, i can’t just run away from everything i don’t agree with. I certainly can’t change the rules by staying away from all this.

Anyone who know anything about SEO will agree with me that the rules of this SEO challenge by busby are not fair at all. They don’t care about good SEO skills and are not giving an equal opportunity to the newcomers. By allowing contestants to enter web pages on an existing domain into the competition, they rule out the opportunity to so many budding youngsters. Its a given that google gives a lot of weightage to old domain names. So hypothetically speaking, if tomorrow MSN plans to take part in this challenge and host a page on msn.com than no one can defeat them. Now you see the type of advantage these seasoned domains will have.
The main motive of “Busby Web Solutions” behind hosting this feud is to promote their own website. How else do you explain a back link to their own website from participants home page? What other explanation do they have for allowing any domain to participate? They want to appear to be fair by not allowing domains with any of the keyword in them. But whom are they fooling…certainly not me!!!

As the name suggests, “Busby Seo Challenge” is a world championship that invites SEO specialists, guru’s, masters, authorities, hot shots and aces to optimize their respective webpages for the key phrase “BUSBY SEO CHALLENGE”. The target search engine is google. The webmaster whose site ranks first on google on 31st August 2008, 12:00 midday, Perth, Western Australia for the challenge key phrase will be anointed the champion.
